Java Concepts: Compatible with Java 5, 6 and 7 ReviewUpdate: After using this book for some time, I realized I was too lenient. It is an ABSOLUTE RIP-OFF!
There are parts of the book called special topics. These are "extras" that you need to pay 55 dollars and register to the publisher website to get access to. Special topics include, seriously, the switch statement, and escape characters. NOT HAVING THESE THINGS IN THE TEXT IS UNFORGIVABLE!!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!! There are plenty of solid, complete beginning java texts out there. This is a poorly written and incomplete (even as a beginner's text) waste of money. THE AUTHOR AND THE PUBLISHER SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the required text for the Java class I am taking, the author is an instructor here (big surprise). I've read many programming books, and found the O'Reilly books to be some of the best. This on the other hand it absolutely worthless. Too vague for beginners, and has no value as a reference. The glossaries read like an after thought.
I looked up TERM A in the glossary, and it read SEE TERM B, so I looked up TERM B, which said SEE TERM A
UNFORGIVABLE!
The information is presented in the most convoluted manner. Terms are introduced in passing and never explained. The writing is just awful, and scatterbrained. I'm lucky, I know programming well enough to have no problem with the class, I can also use the JAVA documentation from Sun's website.
The programming examples are listed piece meal, and a complete listing of example programs are never given, leaving the student (often first time programmers) to fill in the missing logic and syntax gaps. I hate, hate, hate this book.
Chapter the chapter 4 exercises require that you use a toString method. This hasn't been introduced, and won't be until a much later chapter. Also not introduced is the C style printf statement one needs to use the method in the context of the exercises. Shame on the publishers for releasing such a shoddy book.
The exercises are vague, and often you must download source code from the publisher's website and complete skeleton given. This is an awful way to learn programming, especially for such easy programs. You should learn to write from scratch to get a feel and habit of writing a program shell.
Unfortunately this was written for beginners and it's painful watching my classmates struggle with the material, which is presented in such a haphazard way.
STEER CLEAR OF THIS BOOK!Java Concepts: Compatible with Java 5, 6 and 7 Overview
