Lithium Ion Rechargeable Batteries: Materials, Technology, and New Applications ReviewLithium-ion batteries are now in widespread use and while research and development continues at a fast pace to further understand the underlying science and continually improve the technology, this book unfortunately only focuses on the research aspect.
The list of contributors shows that 17 of the 20 individuals are from academia and this sets the tone for the entire book. The coverage of the underlying science of cathode materials is excellent, electrolytes less so and the anode coverage, limited to carbon materials and neglecting the emerging titanate compounds, is frankly quite poor. As for battery technology, the book fails miserably. When Benjamin Franklin coined the term "battery", he did so because the battery he saw for the first time to him resembled a "battery of cannon". It seems the editor of this book allows the term, as many do nowadays, to mean cell as well as battery. This is unfortunate, as the title of this book is thus misleading. You will not find any discussion of cell-balancing, charge regimes, thermal management, or any other battery related topic. Even the final chapter, from an affiliate of the Nissan company, focuses on the cell issues that need to be addressed for an electric vehicle application. One would have hoped for a discussion of battery life testing, depth of discharge, end of charge voltage cut-off, and other engineering topics so relevant to today's applications, but these are not included.
This is an up to date book on lithium-ion research activities and is of a high scientific standard. It should be considered a "must have" for researchers and students of the technology. Each chapter contains extensive references and all key contributors to the science and technology over the past thirty years are cited. Engineers, however, will be disappointed that battery systems and applications are not covered in any depth, and those with a limited budget may well choose to omit this book from their personal libraries.
