Introduction to Composite Materials Design, Second Edition (Composite Materials: Design and Analysis) ReviewStudent and practicing engineers will definitely find a very useful material in the Second Edition of `Introduction to Composite Material Design' book. The approach of the book is remarkable, taking the reader from the basic stage of fiber and matrix classification and properties, through composite material processing methods, then through calculation and design of material properties, to the stage of structural analysis and design. The book does not require prior background of composite materials, yet not being limited to an introductory level. The high orientation on design at both material and structural level can be recognized throughout the book, the accent being not especially on mathematical derivation and formulation of the problems, but rather on concepts with practical application.
The upgrade from the First Edition is remarkable: three new chapters added to the original ten ones and more than 50% increase in each of number of pages, worked out examples and suggested exercises. The information is updated by considering new materials (e.g., modern fibers and textile reinforcements) and methods of analysis and design. A large database of material properties is offered through many tables. All the treated problems are implemented and updated in the computer based design tool CADEC. A wide collection of references are listed as related material.
Among noticeable additions are: a section on probabilistic design for reliability, which is then applied in the structural design chapters; new fracture mechanics approach on composite material strength, which is applied in order to calculate the `in-situ' (i.e., considering the laminate configuration) material strength properties; a chapter on damage mechanics, where the effect of progressive nature of damage is considered on the reduction of material properties; a chapter on woven fabric reinforcements, with comprehensive and novel classification, as well as elastic properties, progressive failure and strength modeling; a chapter on structural applications of FRP to straightening of concrete structures, with practical ACI guidelines and requirements.
