Math Made a Bit Easier: Basic Math Explained in Plain English ReviewI'm a homeschooling mom who, in desperate search of "THE answer" to mine and the children's math struggles, stumbled upon Mr. Zafran's math website (MathwithLarry dot com) about mid September. It was the greatest "stumbling upon" I'd ever encountered, math-wise. It wasn't long before I was browsing through "Book Info" on his site, then on to google books where I simply couldn't stop reading! Mr. Zafran's views on HOW and WHY children (and adults) fall behind and end up completely LOST in maths made perfect sense, and I knew and understood these truths all too well. Needless to say, I did not hesitate to order the books-ALL OF THEM! How could I not, and at these VERY REASONABLE prices -a steal, actually- I couldn't afford NOT to.
I am still reading, learning and teaching myself all over again, but I am enjoying it immensely. When I am reading/studying the lessons, I feel like Mr. Zafran is right there with me, instructing me step-by-step in my very dialect, as if these books were written just for me. I just can't say enough about these books, and how well-written they are, and how very easily they can be followed and understood. They've been an absolute life-saver for me and the kids, who, by the way, are actually ENJOYING math daily now. I am no longer "dreading" having to learn and teach a new math concept, nor am I seeking "alternatives" any longer. I found THE answer, and just want to say, "Thank you, Mr. Zafran...for making math a BIT easier. Or, if you don't mind me saying so, a bit MUCH easier."
~M.S.Math Made a Bit Easier: Basic Math Explained in Plain English OverviewAn independent book written and self-published by former math teacher and private math tutor Larry Zafran. Students are justified in proclaiming that "math is hard," but there is a specific reason why they feel this way. The author maintains that the struggle can be lessened by following the roadmap presented, but it will take time and effort on the part of the student. Since math is often not properly taught, it is often not properly learned. Anything that hasn't truly been learned, regardless of subject, is "hard." Once the various concepts are more secure, and the student's gaps in understanding have been addressed, math will have been made "a bit easier" as promised by the book's title. However, the book does not imply that learning math is fast, fun, or easy. Most of the book's content is comprised of the roadmap of topics for a student to work through at his/her own pace. Like all paths, it begins at the beginning, in this case starting with a review of basic arithmetic, followed by basic operations, negative numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and basic probability and statistics. This is the foundation of all math. The space devoted to each topic is proportional to how difficult most students find the topic, as well as how important the topic is in preparation for later math studies. The material is explained conversationally and "in plain English" as promised by the book's subtitle, without talking down to the reader, and without the use of contrived examples or cartoonish illustrations. The book concludes with a chapter on how to effectively study math and improve scores on exams.Like the rest of the book, the chapter takes a unique standpoint on the matter, and offers suggestions which include how to get oneself into the proper mental and emotional mindset for being successful with math.
