Physics ReviewI'm giving this a good score, for bio majors, future-technician-level chem majors, science-education majors, and ag-science majors, who don't really want to master calculus and its first science, physics.
I was helping an 11th grade student on a test in an AP Physics B class (not college-creditable for physics or engineering majors), and the information needed to solve the problems is to be found in Cutnell and Johnson. In a plug-and-chug way. To clarify, even though it's been 35 years since I took calculus-based physics, I could still recognize "what the teacher wanted", so it was perhaps easier for me to connect the problems with the textbook material. I could see it being really hard for the young student.
This isn't physics for physics-interested students, starting with frictionless particles and basic forces, applying the calculus to derive answers, based on conceptual grasping. But if you just need to memorize formulaicc**p, get through your two semesters and leave physics behind, this text is as good as anything out there.
I wouldn't want to use this approach in hs physics; for a totaly elective class attracting gifted math-and-science students, I'd much rather my students get some calculus down, and then show its wonderful fit with physics. It's a tragedy that very few schools are able to get/interested in getting their best students to calculus in 11th grade, or for the most-gifted 10th, but that's the way life is. It's really sad that a physics requirement is imposed on college students who aren't interested in physics, making them complete aalgebra-trig based courses that aren't really physics, but that's the way life is.
It's really sad that for the college students, the publishers finagle emeritus professors (and often young proteges) to amend ancient-material "dumbed-down" "physics" to re-do their older books to quash the used-book market, so everybody can make new money. But that's the way life is. For example, in helping my student with algebra/trig requiring mechanics problems on sliding objects at various angles with friction, and uniform circular motion, everything he needed to know was contained in the authors' first edition. or any non-calculus textbook from the 1950s.Physics Overview
