Ecological Risk Assessment, Second Edition ReviewThis is a good supplement to some of Suter's earlier works when he was with USDOE. When used with several of the standard referenced materials for ecological risk assessment developed by: the USEPA, USDOE, USDoD and his first edition "Ecological Risk Assessment for Contaminated Sites" ecotoxicologists and risk assessors will have a good reference point.
Although this book is not a comprehensive reference or handbook it offers/presents practical applications and points which will shake the cobwebs from the experience ecotoxicologist, environmental toxicologist, and environmental epidemiologist head.
I would only suggest that in addition to this book, which is an excellent reference source, the reader should have a good understanding of the principles of toxicodynamics toxicogenomics, toxicokentics - PBPK modeling and fugacity modeling in addition to species pathology.
Over the years the principles of human/animal anatomy, physicology and pathophysiology have been omitted or lost in most risk assessments due to political interference or cost. Unfortunate as it is, this crude mind-set has shown up in the quality of work produced by toxicologist and epidemiologist to the point in which several general engineering, A/E firms, hazardous materials removal and environmental management companies believe a civil engineer, geologist or environmental planner can adequately do the work of a true health scientist.
These points need to be stressed in reference materials like "Ecological Risk Assessment" by Dr. Suter II. Professional responsibility is just as important as social responsibility.
