Energy Demand and Climate Change: Issues and Resolutions ReviewIf you want to become well-informed on the world's energy challenges and solutions but don't have a background in energy, or if you have the background but want to deepen your understanding in general or about specific potential solutions, this is a great book.The book has succinct explanations of all the factors contributing to climate change, with the underlying scientific principles. The writing style is neither too scientific nor too basic, with a balance between technological explanations and historical background that kept the book interesting. The book is actually fun to read, written with numerous anecdotes showing the human side of the scientists who have contributed to the field over the past centuries.
My daughter, a freshman at Wellesley College, found the book to be quite helpful for her class in environmental science, both for insights in the subject and for the 'recommended reading' listed with each chapter.
The 3 major parts of the book can stand alone, which is useful if you have a particular interest:
I. "Questions" (what are the problems, what can be attributed to the human contribution versus nature - there are many natural factors beyond what one reads in the popular press);
II. "Answers" (technology that is likely to contribute to the solution); and
III. "Dreams" (far out solutions that could possibly provide major solutions in the long term). There is a surprisingly great variety of possible solutions to our energy problems in these two sections. The "Dreams" section is fascinating.
Part IV, "Nightmares" (what happens if we don't solve the energy/climate problem), is mercifully short (!), though I must say that the description of 'Fermi's Paradox' is an intriguing thought experiment that suggests that civilization may well succumb to such grand challenges.Energy Demand and Climate Change: Issues and Resolutions Overview
