The Greatest Guns of Gun Digest ReviewFor almost 70 years GUN DIGEST has enjoyed a reputation as a trusted, go-to source of detailed, accurate information on firearms and the firearms industry. During its lifetime, GUN DIGEST has offered up articles on guns, pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns and military arms from around the world written by a variety of respected authors. GREATEST GUNS OF GUN DIGEST collects 39 articles published in GUN DIGEST ANNUAL, articles that represent "the cream of the crop of the greatest gun annual of all time." Whether you're a shooter, a collector or just a gun buff, GREATEST GUNS OF GUN DIGEST should be just what the doctor ordered.GREATEST GUNS OF GUN DIGEST divides those 39 articles into chapters entitled 'Handguns,' 'Rifles,' 'Shotguns' and 'Military.' Most of the articles can be found in the first two sections. The 'Handguns' chapter, for example, includes articles on the Luger, the .44 Magnum, Smith & Wesson 38 Master, Colt Single Action revolvers, the 45 Automatic, the Glock and so on. Gems found in the 'Rifles' chapter range from Collecting Old Winchesters to the 460 Weatherby Magnum big bore, Ruger 10/22 Carbine, Model 70 Winchester, Plastic Remington Rifles, etc. Among the articles found in the 'Shotguns' chapter are ones on Remington Models 10s, Ithaca's Mag 10 and the Winchester 42. Lastly, the 'Military' chapter has articles on - what else!?! - the Thompson Submachine Gun, 1903 Springfield and the M16A2.
The earliest article - on the Smith & Wesson .22-caliber revolver - dates from 1952; the last - covering the Mauser Model 98 - was published in 1994. Among the authors are such luminaries as Elmer Keith, Colonel Charles Askins and John Amber. The articles are illustrated with photographs, side-views, exploded-views, diagrams and artwork. Since we're talking reprinted material here, a few of the photographs are showing their age but overall the illustrations are good.
In short, the combination of development history, operational use and technical analysis along with the accompanying illustrations make for interesting reading. I would have given GREATEST GUNS OF GUN DIGEST five stars except for one omission: no index! As is, I gave it four stars - actually 4 1/2 - but, in any case, gun buffs of all persuasions should find something of interest in this 2010 Gun Digest Books release.
